WORLD-CLASS
GOLF CLUB UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Perhaps
the most dramatic new golf club build in England in recent memory
is under construction in the picturesque Surrey countryside, at
Ottershaw, only a few miles from the classic courses of Sunningdale
and Wentworth. Queenwood Golf Club, set on 290 acres of classic
heathland and ancient royal hunting grounds is planned to open
in late summer 2001. The golf course is designed by David McLay
Kidd who was recently ranked as #1 Hottest Architect in Golf by
Ron Whitten, architectural editor for US Golf Digest after his
success at Bandon Dunes in Oregon (ranked 3rd Best Modern Course
in USA by GolfWeek, 44th in the World by Golf Magazine).
Walter
A Forbes and Frederick D Green are the moving force behind Queenwood.
Forbes and Green have developed other widely acclaimed golf clubs
in the US, including Nantucket Golf Club (Best New Private Club
Award from Golf Digest in 1998, and listed in the 1999 Golf Magazine
Top 100 rankings as 57th in the US and 97th in the world). They
also developed the highly regarded Eagle Springs Golf Club in
Colarado, recipient of Crittendens' Best New Clubhouse Award in
1996.
Kidd
is extremely enthusiastic about the venture, "Walter and
Fred have found an incredible site for golf, and Queenwood will
mark a renaissance of classic healthland golf course architecture
exemplified by great architects like Colt, Abercromby and Fowler.
Working early in this century, they conceived such timeless layouts
as Sunningdale, Worplesden and Walton Heath."
Forbes
and Green are quite determined to create an exclusive golfing
environment with exceptional amenities. Membership, by invitation
only, is limited to just 350, plus 50 international members. While
construction at Queenwood is just underway, with a planned opening
in late summer of 2001, the membership is already approaching
half full. Guests must always be accompanied by members when playing
the course, enhancing the uncrowded atmosphere of the club. The
extensive clubhouse of 25,000 sq ft will include a five-star quality
restaurant and eight luxurious overnight suites for members and
their guests.
