BRITISH
OPEN 2001 (LYTHAM ST. ANNES) TOUR
GOLF
ITINERARY
Next
year the spotlight will be on Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf
Club in Lancashire, for the tenth time – a true indictment of
international importance in this most testing of sports! From
Bobby Jones in 1926 to Tom Lehman in 1996, the past winners at
Lytham and St. Annes have become part of the rich heritage that
attracts visitors from all over the world. G & L Golf Tours
invites you to join them for the 130th Open Golf Championship.
Monday
16th July 2001
We
meet and greet you at Manchester Airport and transfer you to
Lytham St. Annes. You will check in at the Edenfield Country
House Hotel. This property offers the chance to escape from the
hectic pace of life and unwind in an atmosphere of tranquillity
rarely found today.
Edenfield
was built in 1871 when it became the home of Thomas Threlfall,
a wine merchant from Lancashire. Soon after the First World War
the house became a private school for girls, run by the Robertshaw
family. In 1930 the school closed and Edenfield was run as a
residential hotel . It has been run by the Furnishing Trades
Association since 1956 and is the only house in the area unspoilt
by later additions. This property overlooks the sea with wonderful
seafront walks, and has three golf courses, including Lytham and
St. Annes literally 5–15 minutes stroll away!
You
have the spacious grounds, a restored conservatory, games room
and fitness centre, patio and en-suite bedrooms with four special
feature rooms, all available to you.
Tuesday
17th July 2001
After
breakfast you can take the opportunity to take in the sea air,
or work out in the fitness centre. Before lunch you will be transported
to Fairhaven Golf Club which is within Lytham St. Annes. This
is a lighter start to the week, just to get you warmed up, but
remember this is still a qualifying course, so it has its hidden
traps! It is a flat but interesting parkland links course of
very good standard. There are natural hazards as well as numerous
bunkers and players need to produce particularly accurate second
shots.
Wednesday
18th July 2001
This
is an earlier start today, as we are heading off to Southport
to play Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. Founded in 1906, S&A
as it is affectionately known, is a links course that provides
a wonderful test for all golfers of all ages and ability. The
original layout was designed by James Braid, and although the
Course has seen ongoing improvements, the traditional links feel
has been retained. The Club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches
in 1933 and in 1937 plus a host of top professional and amateur
events including the British Ladies Open. This is also a final
qualifying course for The Open. There are 18 holes of championship
golf, all with their own special characteristics. Whether you
are playing the testing par 3 first hole or the world famous 16th
(known as Gumbleys), the profusion of heather and gorse demands
accuracy from tee to green. Golf Monthly magazine has placed
this course in its top 50 Golf Courses in Great Britain.
Thursday
19th July 2001
You
can have a leisurely morning before transport whisks you off to
Southport again, this time to play The Hesketh Golf Club. Of all
the Qualifying Courses that we have played, this is one of our
favourites. It is the senior club of Southport, founded in 1885.
The Championship course comprises much of the original territory
plus a large area of reclaimed land on the seaward side – essentially
links in character. It does feel like you are playing two different
courses and offers a good test of golf.
Friday
20th July 2001
Today
you will be staying in Lytham St. Annes and playing St. Annes
Old Links. Again a seaside links, qualifying course for the Open
Championship. A compact and very high standard of course, particularly
the greens. The longest holes have to be the 5th,
17th and 18th also very windy. The most
famous hole is the 9th, a par three, watch out for
it!!
Saturday
21st July/Sunday 22nd July 2001
You
have your tickets for the Open, follow your chosen golfer round
the course, sit in the stands with your flask and blanket, watch
the big screen in the champagne tent, or shop till you drop in
the tented village. Whatever you choose we are sure you are going
to love every minute of the British Open 2001!! Transport will
be available in the morning to drop you off at the Course and
will then pick you up later in the day and drop you back at the
Hotel.
Monday
23rd July 2001
Sadly
it is Airport day, or transfer onto your next destination. You
will be transferred to Manchester Airport, hopefully carrying
some wonderful memories of Lytham and St. Annes, The Open and
of your own golf! G & L Golfing Tours look forward to welcoming
you to Scotland/Ireland/South Africa/New Zealand/Argentina, in
the future.
