The new £10 million Almenara Hotel, the first to be built by Sotogrande SA on its exclusive residential resort and well away from the tourist hustle and bustle on the Costa del Sol in Spain, is due to open 1 September 1999. Destined to be one of the finest retreats in Europe, the 4 star hotel is situated on a hilltop location with commanding views over the surrounding new Almenara Golf Course and Mediterranean.

The 17th Hole

The hotel is a major part of a £28 million development programme at Sotogrande started last year including the golf course which has been designed by top designer, Dave Thomas. Eighteen holes have been completed and a further 9 holes will be added in 200, together with a driving range for up to 100 players and a golf academy with video swing analysis equipment and three full size practice holes.

The hotel is being built in traditional Spanish style using all Spanish materials and making the most of one of the highest points on the 2,000 hectare estate, overlooking pine and cork oak trees towards the sea, with lakes and the Almenara hills as a backdrop. There will be 150 double rooms set in a combination of single, and double storey units around the main hotel building, ten of which will convert into one or two bedroom suites. All have balconies, terraces and en suite bathrooms, as well as satellite television, in-house videos, mini bar and telephone. All the hotel facilities can be accessed over beautifully landscaped grounds by golf buggy.

The Almenara hotel will cater for every gastronomic whim. A formal restaurant with terraces for dining al fresco, will offer international cuisine with an emphasis on Spanish, together with Pacific Rim specialties and using fresh produce whenever possible, much of which will be grown especially in he hotel's own kitchen . Top UK chef, John Player, previously at Wentworth Golf Club, the St. Enodoc Hotel at Rock in Cornwall and most recently Australia, has been appointed to manage the whole catering operation. As well as two bars, one tapas bar, and a more formal piano bar there will also be a coffee shop and restaurant in the Health Club.

The Health Club will be for hotel guests as well as Sotogrande residents and will include a salon, sauna, steam room, gym, aerobics studio and pools with trainers in attendance at all times.
