BELEK OF THE BALL

Talking
of history, golfers will enjoy the clubhouse feel at Nobilis
G.C. which makes for the perfect double-bill at this end of
the strip.
For Nobilis
unashamedly celebrates the areas Roman roots - right down
to the vast, grandiose mosaic murals outside the pro shop.
Even the
club logo 'goes for it', with its young Roman golfer complete
with laurel wreath, off-the-shoulder toga number and footwear
nearer to Jesus sandals than the mandatory softspikes. Tacky?
Maybe just a little. But there's nothing
|
| contrived
about the golf course which is in fact more traditional than
its neighbours. Architect Dave Thomas has resisted the temptation
for tricked up features and come up with a highly consistent
test. Fairways follow serene avenues of pines, with the attractive
water hazards and the River Acisu only really troubling you
at the 8th, 10th and 16th. |
|
It's also
the the most subtle design, with seemingly simple holes, like
the 'birdieable' 271-metre, yielding your intrepid reporter
a triple bogey courtesy of its tiny plateau green surrounded
by 'invisible' contouring that Donald Ross would have been
proud.

The lively
Yorkshireman, John Nolan, presides over Nobilis which also
has its own cluster of stylish villas - though a new Nobilis
Hotel will open on the magnificent beach, next season.
That will
take the tally of hotels to over 20, with no shortage of land
along this 100-mile undisturbed stretch where we understand
the long-term masterplan is for a total of 11 golf courses.
