Western Loire

With a coastline softer than that of northern Brittany, this area has some superb courses and the hotels are either close to the sea or inland. On the border with Brittany, there is the sophisticated resort of La Baule with its famous course La Bretesche, always a delight to play, and the old town of Nantes to visit. Staying in this area, you can drive south to Vendee with its vast sandy beaches and play at St Jean de Monts too.

The area is famous for its rich supply of chateaux, with over three hundred of them, often built alongside a river or buried deep within the countryside. This is also an important wine-making area, although at first glance there appears to be little evidence of the industry, you are more likely to see fields of sunflowers or wheat than rows of vineyards here.
