Many people
will stop off in Tozeur on a desert safari through Tunisia's
great south. However, it is well worth taking the time to
explore the town centre with its ornate brickwork and huge
oasis. The unusual activities and places of interest in the
surrounding area make Tozeur an unforgettable
|
|
destination.
The summer months can be sizzlingly hot, but winter sunshine
is practically guaranteed!
|
|
Getting
There
Internal
flights from Tunis and Djerba (1 hour) arrive in Tozeur regularly
and there are direct scheduled flights from many European
cities. There is also an overnight train service (but no couchettes)
to Metaloui from Tunis (8 hours) and louage (shared) taxis
are common.

|
Eating
Out
Tozeur's
hotel have excellent a la carte restaurants, buffets and poolside
snack bars. Lunch at the Tamerza Palace Hotel in Tamerza,
overlooking the remains of the old village washed away by
flash floods, should not be missed.

Miss
- A ride
on the Red Lizard tourist train from Metlaoui through the
spectacular Seldja Gorges.
- The
Dar Chraiet Museum in Tozeur, depicting Tunisian life in
past centuries.
- Sticky
Deglet Nour dates fresh from the palms of Tozeurs verdant
oasis.

Exploring
Four wheel
drive vehicles and drivers are easily hired. The Sahara Desert
is unforgiving and we strongly recommend you do not stray
from the main roads without a guide. Alternatively local travel
agencies and hotels can organise excursions.
- The
town of Douz on the fringes of the Sahara is famous for
its weekly camel market on Thursdays.
- A swim
in La Borbeille, the oasis at Nefta (separate bathing times
for men and women).
- Venture
down the steep path to discover the source of the hidden
spring at Chebika, and marvel at the steep gorges in the
border town of Mides.
