Golf
with Hilton at Avisford Park
Arundel, West Sussex
 |
Located
on the beautiful South Downs, the Hilton Avisford Park has
the air of a stately home. Approached by sweeping driveways
and flanked by well tended flower beds, the hotel is surrounded
by an 18 hole parkland golf course.
With all
the facilities synonymous with the Hilton name - well appointed
spacious rooms
|
| as
well as a fully equipped leisure centre - guests can relax in
the comfortable lounge bar overlooking the gardens, perfect
for an afternoon reading the papers. The atmosphere is relaxed
and informal and families are welcome. |
The building
was previously a private boys' school, evidence of which can be
found in The Cedar Restaurant with it's oak panelled walls bearing
the names of head boys of past times. The menu changes daily and
offers high quality food and wines at very good value. The service
is excellent and the overall atmosphere is intimate without being
intimidating.
| The
golf course has its own clubhouse, which has recently been refurbished
and is open to guests and the public as well as offering very
reasonable membership. With an attractive patio area, guests
can enjoy lunch and watch the local birdlife on the pond flanking
the fairway of the 1st hole. The clubhouse also has a pro-shop
with friendly helpful staff ready to offer advice. Guests can

clubs, buggies or trollies for a reasonable charge and a round
of golf is around £15. |
 |
The course
itself is a parkland course, featuring many mature trees. Hazards,
which are mainly bunkers, are plentiful. There are a few water
features, which come in the form of small wildlife ponds and
streams. These very much lend to the overall feel of taking
a walk through the grounds of a country estate. The design borrows
much from the natural landscape and surrounding countryside. |
| With
three tees available, this 5016 yard, par 71 course offers a
pleasant round of golf, there is one par 5 hole, the remainder
being par 4s with a few par 3s to keep you interested. The front
nine is set in open parkland and the back nine on either side
of a valley. There is also a putting green in the gardens of
the hotel. |
 |
| The
golf course reflects the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel and
golfers of all abilities are welcome and there were plenty of
juniors taking advantage of this fact. |
| For
those who decide to give the golf a miss, there is much to do
at the hotel in the Living Well Health club, on the tennis or
squash courts or the croquet lawn. Once you've had your swim,
beauty treatment and sauna, you can always visit the town of
Arundel itself. |
 |
This historic
town attracts many visitors to its castle, cathedral and antique
shops. The castle is the home of the Duke of Norfolk and dates back
to the Norman Conquest. With the beautiful River Arun flowing through
it, Arundel has an olde worlde charm which invites you to wander
through its streets, stop for tea and watch the world go by.
The Amberley
Museum is very close to Arundel and allows you to take a trip back
in time, taking journeys on a vintage bus or narrow gauge railway.
Slightly further afield, is the old Roman harbour town of Chichester,
or if you fancy the seaside, both Bognor Regis and Littlehampton
are close by.
Whatever takes
your fancy, the Hilton Avisford Park makes an excellent base from
which to explore West Sussex and improve your golf!
