The Official Texas Golf Guide
For a destination
usually associated with cowpokes, longhorns and rodeos, Texas boasts
a rich golfing heritage. From lush manicured lawns in East Texas
to championship links on the Gulf Coast, Texas scores a hole-in-one
with professionals and hackers alike.
Aside from the
golf, there is a wide variety of activities to do and places to
see; there is of the "Western Experience", cattle drives,
ranches and rodeos. But don't forget the history, Texas has a pretty
eventful one and there are plenty of missions, forts and battle
sites, along with the replicas of Columbus' three ships at Corpus
Christi.
Texas also has
beautiful beaches with wide expanses of white sand, gently sloping
off to the Gulf of Mexico. Nature and the outdoors is a big feature
of Texas, with plenty of activities such as hiking, fishing, boating
and rock climbing. However if you get tired of all that open space,
visit one of the big cities in the state, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin,
they all have plenty to offer, with shopping, the arts, sports and
of course theme parks for the kids.
But back to
the golf. The true strength of Texas golf lies in the range of courses
that are available and the diversity of the terrain that characterises
the region. The state posses everything from easily accessible public
courses, just a stone's throw from the major city airports, to beautiful
championship courses designed by famous names and golfing legends
such as Greg Norman and Arnold Palmer. Local Hero Bryon Nelson,
PGA Champion, was responsible for the challenging but compelling
Las Colinas Course. This is now the course of the Bryon Nelson Classic
- one of several PGA tournaments played in the state.
Texas is divided
into seven different regions, each offering its own unique landscape
as well as golf courses, of which we will take a look at a selected
